Justice Center News June 2026

From the Director                            Rus Funk

June is here! and June is a busy busy month! It’s the month we celebrate Father’s Day, Juneteenth and of course Pride. It’s also the month where our attention to the city’s budget is at its highest (Metro Council has received the Mayor’s proposed budget and is working hard on finalizing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year). There are also no limit to other events and programs available in our city. Below you find a small handful of what some of our partners have going on.
I recently attended a summit organized by the Interfaith Alliance on countering white Christian nationalism. One of the lessons I brought home with me is the power of interfaith organizing to counter the messaging and influence of white Christian nationalists. I know that several congregations have organized events about white Christian nationalism, and am exploring ways we can move beyond educational events to start bringing us together, as a multifaith force to promote the kind of Democracy in which multi-culturalism flourishes. I look forward to working with some of yall in this process.
I am also heading for vacation in early June. This has been a challenging year. The Justice Center has also been more productive and impactful than we have ever been — and in doing so have strengthend our foundation for even more impact in the coming months. I’m looking forward to catching my breath with my family.  I also look forward to engaging with you all the rest of this summer and fall.

What’s Happening at the Justice Center

Democracy Festival

We held our inagural Democracy Festival on May 17 — THANK you to Americana Community Center for hosting it!
We had a great program with a long list of great performers and speakers who touched on ways that we can all work to expand and advance democracy in these times. I also want to thank all the organizations (20+) who showed up to provide additional information and resources and to be of support.
We will be planning additional events this fall to continue these conversations and skills building. We have also joined forces with VOCAL KY or an event they are planning for July 5.  Stay tuned for more information about both of these next steps!
Safe and Stable Housing for All
The Safe and Stable housing for All Campaign is an organized effort to request $31.5 mil in support of our under and un housed neighbors. The Mayor put a bit over $17 mil in his proposed budget to Metro Council. The Campaign is asking Metro Council to help close this gap. Two primary foci are to secured funding for housing repair, and housing stablization (both of which received no funding in the Mayor’s proposed budget). Helping our neighbors who are more financially insecure to be able to make the necessary repairs to stay in their homes, and providing supportive stablization services are critical parts of supporting continuum that helps to reduce homelessness.
We encourate you to contact your Council members and urge them to support funding in these two critical areas! Go here to find your council member.
Pride Month
The Justice Center is organizing and participating in a full array of events for Pride Month. We participated in Pride Nite at Louisville Soccer — joining 15 other area congregations who filled a section.
We will be participating in the Pride Parade and Festival on June 20. The Justice Center, All Peoples Unitarian Universalist Church and First Unitarian church are joiing forces to have a float for the parade, and the two churches will have a booth for the Festival.
We are planning to mobilize fols to attend the Drag Revival organized by Highland Community Ministries.
AND the Jusice Center and Transpire: the Interfaith Network in solidarity with Trans Folx is organiing the “Uplift Trans Resource Market” on Sat June 27 at 4:00 at First Lutheran Church (more info below).

July and Beyond…

We continue to plan for the rest of the summer and fall. We are planning a next “Community Conversation” in July, are partnering with VOCAL KY for a democracy event on July 5, and are plannning workshops with League of Women Voters and SisterSong in July and August.

Clean energy group launches YouTube news channel
The Renewable Energy Alliance of Louisville (REAL) has launched a news playlist on its YouTube channel:  “REAL News,” features comments and analysis about developments related to REAL’s work to achieve the Metro Council’s goal of 100% clean energy by 2040. The first item on the REAL News playlist is a segment (8 minutes) from the March 25 environmental mayor’s forum.
The news playlist joins three other playlists on the REAL YouTube channel: (1) Statements on clean energy made by REAL members to the Louisville Metro Council; (2) Statements on clean energy made by REAL members to the Kentucky Public Service Commission; and (3) An archive of “REAL Good News” events, which was a series of 90-minute programs on various aspects of renewable energy, that ran from 2020-2024.
You can find all four playlists on the REAL YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/@RenewableEnergyAllianceofLouis/playlists
