Most of my baskets were made in the last two years specifically for this exhibit. Materials used in the baskets were gathered in Louisville and Kentucky parks, or found on vacations in Montana, Maine, Colorado, South Carolina and Florida. Sometimes I immediately know how a natural material will be used. Others sit in boxes for years before the “aha” moment when they migrate into my studio to be transformed into sculptural or functional forms. My basket-making practice is to begin with rough sketches then design as I construct. As a result, I find the process interesting, challenging, and fun.
I have always worked both two- and three-dimensionally, often alternating between them during the day. Both are rewarding and ideas from one medium can influence the development of artwork in another medium.
For this exhibit, I selected weavings to show with the baskets, as woven techniques are used in both art forms. Some of the weavings are interpretations of photos I’ve taken, while other designs are created as I work.
Enjoy!
