The term “woke” has been used in Black communities since the 1930s to refer to an awareness of the harmful effects of racial prejudice and discrimination. It became widely known as a hashtag during the Black Lives Matter protests of recent years and has since been turned into a tool of division and scorn by leaders who wish to halt the progress made towards building a better, more diverse America. We’ll talk about our Unitarian Universalist calling to be awakened in a society that sleeps through too much suffering and oppression.
