Last summer, the Unitarian Universalist Association adopted language describing Unitarian Universalism through shared values (remember JETPIG?), all centered around love, and each accompanied by a short statement. Most of the statements seem to speak to how the value connects to UUism: e.g. for “Transformation” we say “We adapt to the changing world.” But with respect to “Generosity,” we say “We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope.” I think there is more to be said about generosity and its importance to who we are as religious liberals, not just in its importance to the church’s budget, but in the sense of generosity of spirit. In a world that seems to teach us to focus on scarcity, generosity matters. – Rev. Elwood Sturtevant
