TJUC Justice Coordinating Council Charter

November 2018

Vision: To inspire, support and coordinate the justice efforts of TJUC in Louisville, Kentucky and beyond, so that we can make a positive difference in the world.

Mission: The mission of the TJUC Justice Coordinating Council (JCC) is to act as the coordinating body for justice efforts at TJUC, including as the governing board for the TJUC Justice Center, guiding and supporting its work through strategic planning and operational oversight

Values: The JCC will operate with Unitarian Universalist guiding principles always in mind –

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Membership

  • The TJUC JCC is made up of a key representative from each of TJUC’s three justice committees (Green Sanctuary, International Justice, and Social Justice) and a board liaison. These committees may have more than one attendee, but each will have one vote. The board liaison does not have a vote. The minister is requested to attend JCC meetings but as a non-voting member.
  • The Justice Center staff member will be required to attend JCC meetings.
  • Meetings shall be open to any members of the justice committees and of the congregation.

Goals

  • To develop a vision and a strategic plan for the Justice Center;
  • To create a budget for the Justice Center and provide accountability for the budget
  • Long-term, develop self-sustaining funding for the Justice Center
  • In collaboration with the minister, hire and supervise a JC coordinator
  • To communicate to the TJUC BOT and congregation the impact of the JC

Note that the 3 justice committees will continue to function individually:

  • They will continue with goals and activities that address their individual missions
  • They will retain their individual budgets and independent oversight over these budgets
  • These activities may include those that are more aligned with a social service orientation, e.g. working with Brightside or Planned Parenthood, KEAP, etc.

General Procedures:

  • The JCC will meet on a monthly basis (1st Monday of the month, in the Fahs Room). More frequent meetings will be called as necessary. Attendees may attend virtually as needed.
  • The JCC will be chaired by each of the committee representatives on a rotating basis – each taking a 4-month period as chair.
    Committee representatives will take critical issues to their respective committees for discussion and recommendations.
  • The board liaison will make reports at the monthly BOT meeting.
  • The JCC Chair will request meeting agenda items from representatives 10 days prior to meetings. The JCC Chair will provide a Meeting Agenda 2-4 days prior to meetings.
  • At each meeting a recorder will be designated to take minutes.
