The Art and Science of Welcoming

Being welcoming of “others” is both an art and a science. Ricky will focus on the Latinx immigrant experience as he explores the art (creating spaces, interacting with others, creating norms that support others to feel welcomed) and the science of being welcoming (understanding and challenging implicit bias, etc.)

Ricky Santiago is the Executive Director of the Americana Community Center. He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico moving to Louisville in 2001 due to his father’s work. Ricky comes from a long line of public service, son of a Bilingual Instructor for JCPS  and the union rep for American Federation of Government Employees. Prior to taking the role at Americana, Ricky served for over 8 years in local government, where he established the Global Leadership Academy, and worked to make Louisville the second city ever to earn Welcoming City Certification by Welcoming America.
