Reception Sunday, May 12th

ROBERTA MARX GALLERY,

Announces the exhibition of:

Gwen Burk Robert Jackson is a long-time Louisville artist. He says, “I have been creating art for over 60 years and change. I have won awards and been in a lot of shows. I have an MFA from Southern Illinois University, a Bachelor’s degree in Art from Murray University. One of the paintings on exhibit in the entrance room, entitled “God Bless the Child” won first place in a prestigious competition in New York, winning out over other well-known artists from that City.

“I spent three semesters, studying with Carl Holty (a German-born American abstract painter. Harold Rosenberg described Holty as “a figure of our art history,” known for his use of color, shape and form). Holty taught me a lot about color form and compositional thinking.

“On my own, I studied the Masters. My recent paintings have borrowed from looking at paintings from the early Northern Renaissance. I’ll let the paintings [exhibited here] speak for themselves,” says Jackson.

Gwen Burke was influenced by Seattle and Chicago early, then spent most of her life in Louisville. “But nothing has influenced me as much as design from all cultures, especially Japanese and African.”

She makes sculptures as well as paintings and drawings, and says, “There is nothing I would rather do. I live inside the ‘fire of rebellion and the caress of tenderness. Each edge carries inquiry and tradition.’ I carry with me a great respect for the forces that move us to create art in this life.”

The Roberta Marx Gallery is located at 4936 Brownsboro Road in the lobby of All Peoples UU Church (Across from Kroger and behind Rodes Department Store), Louisville, KY 40222.
